About the Program
The program in Sharjah is designed to combine Arabic language and Middle Eastern and Gulf studies courses with electives in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and other direct enrollment courses at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). Studying alongside students from various corners of the Arab World provides students with the opportunity to experience different perspectives and ideas within an academic environment and structure based on a U.S. university system. Most of the Arabic language courses are designed for nonnative speakers and focus on modern standard Arabic.

Students enroll directly at AUS, which gives you access to an extensive selection of courses in the humanities and social and natural sciences, all of which are offered in English. From civil and chemical to computer and electrical – whatever your interest in engineering, you'll find the courses to suit them in Sharjah. AUS is the first university overseas to secure professional accreditation in Architecture by NAAB. They also have professional accreditation from ABET for Engineering.

Sharjah, U.A.E.
Though traditionally conservative, the UAE is one of the most liberal countries in the Gulf, with other cultures and beliefs generally tolerated. Before oil was discovered in the 1950s the UAE's economy was dependent on fishing and a declining pearl industry. But since oil exports began in 1962, the country's society and economy have been transformed.

The comfortable and relatively quiet environment of the Emirate of Sharjah is located a mere 40 minutes from the popular tourist destination of the Emirate of Dubai and its high-paced, cosmopolitan lifestyle. This city of approximately 680,000 prides itself on being the “cultural capital” of the UAE, offering a range of museums, traditional souks (markets), and theaters. Although Sharjah developed rapidly under British rule in the 19th century, it has maintained its traditional Muslim values while developing its regional trade relationships.

Student Life
You'll begin your study abroad experience in Sharjah even before leaving home by participating in a CIEE online predeparture orientation. The Director of Student Services meets with students online and shares information about the program and site, highlighting issues that alumni have said are important, and giving you time to ask questions. When you arrive in Sharjah you will participate in an on-site orientation program. The goal is to introduce you to the country, culture, and academic program, and provide practical information about living in the U.A.E. You also will be introduced to the academic requirements of the university, and are shown how to make the best use of campus facilities and services. During orientation, local students assist the international students. The services provided during orientation are maintained on an individual and group basis throughout the program.
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 and was designed to combine an American-style education with the traditional values and modern aspirations of the UAE and the Gulf region. The University enrolls about 5,200 students from 80 nations. Approximately 20 percent of the students are native Emirati, and more than 75 percent of the total student body is from Arab nations. The university faculty has been drawn from more than 45 countries. The campus includes 12 student residential halls as well as a large sports complex, an extensive library and a student center. About 40 percent of the student body lives in campus housing.
